About this project

Ask4Mo - AI Interview & Career Preparation

Prepare for the role. Practise with purpose. Improve with evidence.

Why I built Ask4Mo

After more than 25 years working in People & Culture, talent acquisition and leadership, I've spent a large part of my career on the hiring side of the table.

I've seen talented candidates struggle in interviews, not necessarily because they lack ability, but because they struggle to connect their experience to what the employer actually needs.

They know their work. They have the skills. But when the questions come, their strongest evidence doesn't always come through.

That observation became the starting point for Ask4Mo.

I wanted to apply what I'd learned about hiring, competencies and evaluating professional experience to something designed for the candidate, not the recruiter.

What is Ask4Mo?

Ask4Mo is an AI-powered interview and career-preparation platform that brings the entire preparation journey together around one job opportunity.

Instead of asking a generic chatbot to generate interview questions, a candidate can create an Opportunity, add the role and job description, bring their own professional evidence, and work with Mo, an AI career-preparation coach.

The journey follows four connected stages:

Opportunity → Prepare → Practice → Progress

Candidates can:

  • Understand the opportunity: Organize role requirements, company context and relevant professional evidence.

  • Prepare with Mo: Explore competencies, analyze job requirements, identify evidence gaps and build a preparation plan.

  • Practise realistic interviews: Answer tailored questions, work through deeper follow-up questions and receive structured feedback.

  • Review and improve: Revisit completed interviews, examine feedback and track progress over time.

  • Stay in control: Decide what preparation context Mo can remember, manage saved information and control what is shared.

Ask4Mo supports eight interface and AI-coaching languages, with language-specific capabilities and knowledge coverage subject to documented limitations.

The AI engineering behind it

The most important engineering decision was that Mo should not behave like an unrestricted chatbot.

I built Mo as a bounded, stateful LangGraph agent with controlled tools and three specialist capabilities covering opportunity requirements, candidate evidence and interview strategy.

It uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to retrieve career knowledge when relevant, with source references where supporting evidence is available. If reliable evidence is missing, the system is designed to acknowledge that limitation rather than manufacture an answer.

A human-in-the-loop process controls sensitive actions such as saving preparation memory and handing approved context into an interview session.

Interview evaluation runs through a separate structured-output service rather than allowing the agent to make unrestricted judgments.

Technology stack: Python, FastAPI, LangGraph, LangChain, OpenRouter, Next.js, TypeScript, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL/SQLite, Chroma vector search, Pydantic, pytest, Vitest and Playwright.

The platform is supported by automated testing, evaluation checks, privacy controls, user-scoped data access and safeguards against unsupported AI claims.

What I learned

Building Ask4Mo has reinforced something I already believed from my HR career: good decisions require good evidence.

AI engineering added a new dimension to that belief.

Making an LLM produce a convincing answer is relatively easy. Building an application that understands its boundaries, protects personal information, retrieves relevant evidence, behaves predictably under failure and can be tested systematically is much harder.

The most valuable part of this project has been learning to engineer those boundaries, not simply write better prompts.

What's next?

I'm continuing to develop global career and compensation intelligence, multilingual knowledge retrieval, more advanced preparation capabilities and provider integrations.

Several advanced capabilities are implemented but remain behind controlled rollout gates while quality, source licensing and operational validation continue. Commercial Premium subscriptions and live billing are not yet available.

Ask4Mo does not make hiring decisions, guarantee employment outcomes or replace a human career professional. Its feedback is AI-generated preparation guidance and can be imperfect.

The bigger ambition

I started Ask4Mo because I believe professional interview preparation should not depend entirely on who you know, how much coaching you can afford, or how confidently you can improvise under pressure.

Everyone deserves a better opportunity to show what they are capable of.

Ask More. Be More.
